Giant bubbles will be formed (and popped), creatures will be created and unleashed, and children aged eight and under will showcase their expertise, culture and dreams through art over the next seven days.
Out of the Box Festival Director Brett Howe added Out of the Box 2016 places children in the expert’s chair; recognising we have much to learn from the young people in our lives in particular through their imagination, play and art.
“We held close to 200 workshops at schools across Queensland to create the colourful design elements that people can see right across this Festival,” said Mr Howe.
“The 2016 Festival program reflects the diverse multi-cultural community we live in, including our rich Indigenous history and Asia and Pacific cultures and features seven different productions, 18 workshops, and 20 free activities; comprising 10 exhibitions, and seven free workshops. The program features a total of 17 world premieres including, Stalker Theatre Production’s Creature: An Adaptation of Dot and the Kangaroo, Queensland Ballet’s Little Red Riding Hood, and Imaginary Theatre Production’s I See You.”
Out of the Box 2016 includes, for the first time, extended hours with the introduction of evening shows from 6.00pm including Gazillion Bubble Show, Little Red Riding Hood, and free family screenings of Dad’s Films. Various exhibits including One Sun, One World – Many Dreams, and Lanterns Creative Creatures are open until 7.00pm.
Curated by QPAC for 24 years and supported by the Queensland Government since the first festival, Out of the Box is the only arts festival in Australia dedicated to children 8 and under and one of only a few in the world. It’s also the nation’s largest early childhood arts festival with more than 103,000 participants in the 2014 festival.
The event takes over all QPAC’s theatres and spaces and extends across the Cultural Precinct and South Bank in collaboration with Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Museum, State Library of Queensland and South Bank.
